Drivers form fuel protest convoy

Postby scanny on Sat Jul 19 2008, 11:59 am

Protesters have formed a convoy on the roads of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire to show their anger at high fuel costs.

Their journey started from Trowell Services on Saturday and was due to continue down the M1, the A52 and the A38, before returning to Trowell.

Around 14 vehicles (cars and lorries) were travelling slowly along the lanes.

The demonstrators said they wanted to shame the government into listening to people who were struggling to cope with high fuel prices.

Brian Willoughby, one of the organisers, said: "I think the only way the government's going to listen is if the people on the street shame them into it.

"We've tried with political arguments, we've tried with debates, and unfortunately the government seems to be totally deaf to what's going off on the streets."

He added: "My own business has been going for 11 years and if things don't improve we won't make 12."

Another protest against fuel costs was being held by motorcyclists and car drivers in London on Saturday.
